1862 “Confederate Seal” Shell In Gilt Copper Choice Mint
1862-Dated American Civil War Era, Official Confederate Seal Shell, Uniface in Gilt Copper, Choice Mint.
This is an authentic, very rare large 3.5” (91mm) diameter (plus outer rim edge), large Uniface Confederate Seal Metal Shell which features a central image of General George Washington on horseback, encircled by a ring of crops and an outside ring: THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA - 22 FEBRUARY 1862 - DEO VINDICE.” The detailing is excellent, every tiny detail being sharp and clear. The surfaces are nice and smooth, with no scratches, wear or marks visible. We previously sold a solid example of this seal in our March 1998 auction which hammered for $5,500 and a solid Copper Seal for $3,450 in 2004. Always considered to be a fantastic display piece for historic medal collectors, Civil War specialists, or a museum collection interested in the medallic rarities of the Confederacy.
