Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche, ca. 400-600 CE. Unusual Moche pendant representing a very rare subject - a deformed, almost grotesque human figure. The ancients of the Americas believed that physical deformities were evidence that a being was touched by the deities. These individuals who might be considered outcasts in our society, were actually revered by Pre-Columbian societies. The pendant is carved from sodalite of a rich hue with cinnabar rubbed in the incised markings. It has suspension holes drilled on the backside. Custom stand. 3 cm high
