Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari/Wari culture, ca. 700 CE. Following the decline of the Moche, The Wari (or Huari) Empire emerged as a powerful empire in the Andes. The Wari artisans are esteemed for their ceramics. This near-miniature terracotta kero is a lovely hand built form displaying refined technique and intricately painted decoration representing a stylized crane in the upper register. Waterfowl residing along the water lilies and reeds symbolized the watery realm that ensured sustenance for the ancient peoples of the Americas. Waterfowl were not only an edible gift from mother nature but their ornamental feathers were used to create ceremonial garb. Furthermore, since cranes and other water birds could fly, swim, and dive beneath the water, they were understood to be special creatures who could traverse all three strata of the world and carry great cosmological significance. 3"H x 2-1/2"D
