Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean, Taino culture, ca. 1000 CE. Taino art is comprised of many cult objects associated with the worship of "zemis". The term zemi refers to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits. These zemis are believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Large heads such as this example carved from a rich, black basalt stone are thought to represent the deity Maqeutaurie Guayaba , known as the lord of the Land of the Dead. These cadaverous heads are traditionally housed in homes or special sanctuaries were they are honored with offerings of food or precious gifts. Custom, museum-quality stand. 8"H x 3"W
