Item Details
Description
Antique Japanese Meiji period Katana, having a bone saya and tsuka covered in carved high relief scenes. Beautiful carved work of better quality, age related wear, chip to base. This beautiful piece of craftsmanship is 37" inches long overall. Upon close inspection one can truly appreciate the time effort and patience that went into creating this incredible sword. Simply gorgeous. Katana is a generic word for Japanese backsword or longsword. These were traditionally used by Samurai and paired with a Wakizashi a similarly made but shorter sword. The two weapons together are called Daisho and represented social power and personal honor of the Samurai. The longer sword was used for cutting while the shorter sword for stabbing or seppuku their form of ritual suicide. Ref: The Connoisseur's Book of Japanese Swords by Kokan Nagayama pages 28 & 48
