Description
Set of 8 American sterling silver demitasse spoons in the English King Pattern by Tiffany and Co., Patent 1885. They are in excellent condition, no monograms, no removals. Each of these striking spoons is 4" long, having handles 2 3/4" long and the 8 weigh a total of approx 140 grams. This magnificent pattern features a heavy sterling body accented with a scalloped tip and scrolled edge. The waisted terminal shape, or "King Shape", is derived from an 18th century French design, with the front and back of each piece accented with an intricate seashell pattern. Two very interesting design attributes of English King are its hourglass shape and anthemion clusters located at the midpoint of each handle, and where the handles of each piece meet the bowls. An anthemion is a cluster of honeysuckle leaves that radiate in an outward fashion. This design attribute is a common motif in classic Greek and Roman art, and only a company with the reputation and design pedigree of Tiffany & Co. would have the vision to take simple shapes and create such powerful designs. With the exception of a brief six month suspension in 1942-1943, English King has been produced continually since its patent date in 1885. Provenance: From the estate of the Chisholm family, a noted old Charleston family.
