Description
A Sudanese Sword (Kaskara), mounted in the 18th-19 century and probably used in the war against the British waged by the Mad Mahdi (Muhammad Ahmed) C.1885. Iron hilt with crocodile-skin covered grip, in its original hand stitched nile crocodile skin scabbard, which was sacred to the Mahdi and his followers, the Whirling Dervish. It is believed that some of these swords used European blades captured from crusaders. Double edged blade with engraved geometric pattern both sides. Has age appropriate wear, scabbard tip worn. Measures 31" in scabbard. Blade is 24". Provenance: Charleston SC Private Collection
