Description
Ornate pair of Antique 19th c. Ornate French Opera Glasses. Manufactured by Chevalier, 158 Palais Royal, Paris, a well respected French optical firm established in 1765. The company closed in doors in the late 19th century. Hunt scene with hounds and Stag. 4"x2 1/2"x1 3/4". Provenance: Charleston SC private collection. Fine opera glasses were made by many craftsmen, not only opticians. Each one was worked on by painters, goldsmiths and other artists. By the second half of the 19th century they had become essential fashion accessories for elegant theatre goers. They were often given as gifts for holidays and birthdays.
