Oil on canvas landscape of spring beech trees by William McKendree Snyder (1848-1930). William McKendree Snyder was one of the earliest artist to paint in Brown County, Indiana in the 1870's. Snyder was born in Liberty, Indiana in 1848. He settled permanently in Madison where he specialized in dense forests, especially beech trees. He studied in Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia. Snyder fought in the Civil War and survived the infamous Anderson prison-of war camp. Originally from prominent Madison family. Signed, "W. M. Snyder," lower right. 7" x 12".
