Description
Early 20th Century Maria Martinez "Avanyu" Decorated Black-on-Black Pottery Bowl. (San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico). Signed on base "Marie". In 1918, Dr. Edgar Lee Hewitt, the founder and first director of the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe presented the first Exhibition of Maria and Julian's Black-on-Black Pottery. Maria and Julian created a "set" of pieces with the same "horned-head Avanyu" (water serpent) on them for the Exhibition, with a few pieces for sale inside the Museum at the time. These pieces are sometimes referred to in books as Maria and Julian's "First Firing" pottery, because they are often confused with Julian's first Black-on-Black pottery, and this Avanyu is believed by many to be his first Black-on-Black image. The Exhibition coincided with Santa Fe's first "Indian Fair" in 1918. 5-3/4" h. x 8-1/2" diam. Condition: Good with some glazing wear on side.
