A range of finely crafted Oceanic spears with a variety of fine, partly openwork tips
The spears have long, thin cylindrical shafts made of bamboo, ending in a variety of fine tips. Some are openwork, barbed or with multiple prongs. Several spears are decorated with rattan bindings. In addition to two lances, the key piece is a large Sepik ceremonial dance paddle with figural carving.
The numerous island nations of Oceania used spears of this kind primarily for fishing or pig hunting. Some would also be used in ritual dances to beat a rhythm against the shield.
The pieces are in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The length ranges from 114 to 266 cm. (tfa)
