The mask originates from Nigeria, Eket circa 1940. It is a dance mask of oval shape. A V-shaped pattern is carved into the sides and top exterior ridges of the mask. Along the cheek portions is ridged lateral scarification. Lidded eyes provide the Eket dance mask with serene expression. The dance mask covers a fine black encrusted patina. The Eket are a small ethnic group in South West Nigeria belonging to the Ibibio, who are living in about 45 villages. The formal and ornamental elements of the mask express the symbolism of the Eket people.
