The masks of the Ituri are the most important objects of the tribe
This is a mask from Ituri people, Tygmy region in Central Congo. The dance mask of elongated slim shape is carved of light wood. Below a slightly vaulted forehead round cut eyes, flanking a narrow triangular nose. In large gaping square mouth a single tooth stick remaining. Remnants of a former adornment of pigments in red, grey and white are still visible. Ituri is a rainforest region that is traversed by the Zaire inflows Tshopo, Lindi and Ituri. The region is home to diverse tribes and knows a wealth of mask types that feature great similarity. The widely abstract conception and the painting can be regarded a common feature of the masks.
The mask is mounted on a stand. The condition is good. It is 32 cm in height. (tm)
