Description
ATTRIB. TO JOHN HOPPNER (1758-1810), Marie (nee Walpole) Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh Seated, in White Satin Dress, O.O.C, 49in (125cm)h x 39in (99cm)w. (1) Maria Walpole was the daughter of Edward Walpole and Dorethy Clement. Her grandfather was Robert Walpole, considered to be the first Prime Minister of England (1721-1741). Her parents were not married and this illegitimate status hindered her social status despite her family connection. She married James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave 1759, who died 1763 leaving her a widow. On September 1766, she married Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and brother of King George III. The marriage was conducted in secret as the British Royal family would not have approved of a marriage between a Royal Prince and a widow of non Royal rank and of illegitimate birth. (1)
