CHANCAY PAN PIPES. Peru, 800-1200 AD. The pan pipes consisting of 20 carefully selected reed pipes bound together at the top with interwoven vegetable fiber cord. Some of the cord at top unraveled and a few of the pipes with cracks and one of the two smallest crushed but the other pipes still produce sound. A very rare early wooden musical instrument in exceptional condition for it's age. 5.5 x 13 inches.
Provenance: From the collection of an old time professional art restorer who did work for the Smithsonian among other places.
