Description
Lux by Charles Green and Lyndell Brown
Charles Green and Lyndell Brown (Australian, active since 1989). Lightjet print on Duraclear film of an original painting by Green and Brown with a Lexan thermoplatic support, housed in a black frame. The work depicts, in its lower portion, a profile portrait of a seated woman contemplating a nocturnal landscape, the Yarra River (Victoria, Australia). The woman is borrowed from a hand-tinted photograph made by Baron von Sillfried in the 1870s in Japan. (Information provided by Gibsone Jessop Gallery). In its upper portion, the work shows the title page of a book titled "Exercitation of the Operations of Medicines in Human Bodies." Made in 2003, this work emerged from humanitarian concerns shared by the two artists, who deplored the detention of asylum seekers in Australia. Green and Brown typically intertwine images from various contexts to create representations of the fragmented contemporary world. 33 x 33 in.
Provenance: Purchase from Gibsone Jessop Gallery, Toronto, 2005.
