The present gelatin silver print reveals a picture taken in 1962, when Bert Stern was commissioned by the American Vogue for a three-day shooting with Marilyn Monroe. Only six weeks later, the famous actress died, so that Stern’s series became famous her ‘The Last Sitting’. While some pictures depict Marilyn in nude poses, the present pictures shows her gently smiling and covered by the white sheets of the bed.



The gelatin silver print is verso signed, inscribed and dated with red chalk ‘Bert Stern, Vogue 1962’. The work is in very good condition and has been framed under a mat. The image size is 26.6 x 39 cm and the size of the sheet measures 30.4 x 40.5 cm. The framed work measures 42 x 52 cm.



Bert Stern (1923-2013)

In 1949, Bert Stern became the art director at the fashion magazine Mayfair, which deeply fostered his interest in photography. He made however his first pictures as a soldier in the Korean War and only later, in 1953, he was able to produce a campaign for Smirnoff vodka. In 1960, one of his works was chosen to cover the Vogue magazine. From then on, Stern was able to portray the most famous celebrities in the world, including Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. In 1962, Stern was commissioned for a three-day shoot with Marilyn Monroe. That series became known as her ‘Last Sitting’ and provided Bert Stern with worldwide recognition. (cbo)
