This is the photograph with the title ‘Catalogue’ by the Australian artist Penelope Davis from 2009. Davis collects old books, ‘casts’ them into silicon forms and fills these with a kind of cast resin, so that the replicated books appear as glass objects after the cure of the resin. She treats every ‘glass book’ afterwards with colored gels and adds in the darkroom further colored filters. Davis then exposes the books with the technique of the photogram on color paper. Her atmospheric dense, mysterious pictures are created entirely without camera.

Penelope Davis (b. 1963)

Penelope Davis studied at the University of Melbourne, the Photography Studies College and the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. In 2001, she did a study trip to Tokyo. Davis has participated in a number of national and international group and solo exhibitions. (tm)
