Katz is an internationally well-known photographer who captures fleeting feelings and gestures of his famous sitters with whom he sometimes shares a personal friendship. The present box includes the artist’s book ‘Benjamin Katz – Photographies’ and five original prints depicting the artists Christa Näher (Cologne, 1988), Rosemarie Trockel (Cologne, 1989), Markus Lüpertz (Cologne, c. 1980), Georg Baselitz (Cologne, 1977) and A. R. Penck (around 1980). It is a limited edition published by Edition Cantz. It was created to accompany exhibitions at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum (1989), at the Württembergischen Kunstverein (1990) and at the Kunstverein in Frankfurt (1991).



The artist’s book is signed and numbered with pencil inside ‘Benjamin Katz 23/50’. Each photograph has been signed with pencil lower right ‘B. Katz’. Each sitter signed his portrait with pencil lower left, reading „Christa Näher“, „R. Trockel“, „ar. penck“, „Lüpertz“ or „G. Baselitz“. Each work is also numbered with pencil lower center ‘23/50’ and verso fitted with the photographer’s stamp ‘© Copyright by BENJAMIN KATZ’. The photographs, the artist’s book and the box are in good condition considering age and wear. The image size of the pictures is 26.5 x 17.5 cm and the sheet size is 30.5 x 24 cm. The box measures 31.5 x 25.5 x 2.5 cm.



Benjamin Katz (b. 1939)

Born in Antwerp, Benjamin Katz moved to Berlin at the age of 17. Here, he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste. In 1963, at his first gallery opening, works by Georg Baselitz were seized by the German public prosecution department because of indecent content. Katz remained being active as a gallery owner and he is still a close friend of Georg Baselitz. In 1972, he moved to Cologne, where he worked as a chronicler and essayist. Since 1976, he works as a freelance photographer. He is mainly known for his photographs of art and culture events. From 2006 until 2008, he taught photography at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. He took part in a number of national and international exhibitions. (cbo)
