Description
A RARE AND IMPORTANT SAVINGS BANK. New York, c. 1890. Cast iron. Modeled after and by the M & L Jarmulowsky Banking House which was located at 165 East Broadway. Cast on sides “DEPOSIT YOUR MONEY WITH M&L JARMULOWSKY BANKING HOUSE WHERE IT IS SAFE”. Sender Jarmulowsky established his bank in 1873. When World War I broke out two years after the bank building was completed in 1912, and there were rampant withdrawals as depositors withdrew funds to send to relatives abroad. In 1914, the bank failed. 8” tall. A smaller model lacking the clocks sold at Michael Steinhardt’s auction at Sotheby’s New York in April of 2013 for $12,500, including buyer’s premium.
