Description
Georges Rouault (German, 1871-1958), serigraph of "Parade", a colored etching and aquatint from the portfolio "Cirque de l'Etoile Filante", originally published in 1938, signed in plate lower left "1934 G.R.", lower left edge of print embossed "Arthur Rothmann Fine Art Inc. NYC, Sole Agent For U.S.A.", glued to original mat with gauze silk face, mounted in original birch frame, image measures 24"H x 15.75"W sight, paper measures 28.625"H x 19.5"W, appraised in 1993 for $2,500-7,500 with paperwork.
In 1917 Georges Rouault entered into an exclusive contractual relationship with Parisian publisher and art dealer Ambrose Vollard. Vollard’s riving ambition was to become the greatest publisher of prints and illustrated books and his collaboration with Rouault proved to be one of the most productive in the history of printmaking. The two produced several notable portfolios including Miserere, Les Fleurs du Mal, and Cirque de l’Etoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Stars). The world of the circus had always interested Rouault through its contrast of superficial brightness with the infinite sadness of circus life. The images in this portfolio describe Rouault’s attempt to strip away the “spangles” of the clown’s costume and reveal the “reflection of paradise lost.”
Condition: having a six light surface scratches (longest approximately 1"W) with eight apparent puncture marks to paper.
Property of a Grawn, MI lady.
