A Fine Late Victorian/Edwardian Gilt Brass Combination Pocket Barometer and Compass. Circa 1895 -1910. The 40mm silvered dial signed J Lizars Glasgow Edinburgh ETC. With original Half Hunting Oxblood Leather case. John Lizars was a small chain of shops statrted in Glagow, then opened in Edinburgh and London. They did not manufacture but were simply retailers. They purchased most of their scientific instruments from F. Barker & Sons. The Practical Photographer in 1895 announced the arrival of Lizars in Edinburgh: Mr J Lizars, of Glasgow and Belfast, has opened a branch warehouse in Maitland Street, Edinburgh, with a large assortment of photographic and optical goods. Lizars have now been based at Shandwick Place (previously named Maitland Street) close to the West End of Princes Street for over 100 years.
