John Rogers Cox (Indiana-Illinois 1915-1990) oil on canvas showing a larger than life nude combing her hair amid strange rock formations, rusty machinery, driftwood and a bricked up tenement building. Signed and dated 1953 lower right hand corner. Purchased from Robert Henry Adams Fine Art in 1999. Featured in “Capturing Sunlight The Art of Tree Studio” Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago Cultural Center, June 18 through September 26, 1999. Copies of the small catalog of that show and the Adams catalog in which the painting is listed are available to the purchaser. Sight size is 27 1/2 by 14 5/8 inches. With frame 34 1/4 by 21 1/2 inches. Some craqueleur is noted in the canvas but it has been made nearly invisible by relining at the Chicago Conservation Center in 1996. Original stretcher but newer frame with silver leaf trim. Cox was a meticulous artist, producing very few works in his lifetime. Several of his paintings feature a large nude, thought to be one of his wives.
