Description
Pair of rare, uncataloged Rookwood bluejay figurals designed by Arthur Conant and made specifically for an important wedding in 1934 involving one of the directors of the Pottery. Designed by Arthur Conant, the birds stands 10 3/8 inches tall and are done in shades of blue, rose, green, brown, cream, purple and mauve. The jay and its companion have many areas where the mat gaze pulled and pooled to leave areas where the white porcelain body shows through. It is obvious that both birds are imperfect and were never intended for the wedding set but neither are Xed. We suspect they escaped the pottery before they could be marked as seconds. Marks include the company logo, the date, the date “October 10th 1934” and the name “Conant” impressed in the wet clay with a stamp. Height 10 3/8 inches. Only six of the jays in perfect condition were made along with these two which Karen says are not flawed but merely molting. Very, very rare.
