Description
Kuujjuaraapik (Great Whale River), Mother and Child, ca. 1970, grey stone, signed in syllabics, 10.75 x 5.5 x 5.25 in, 27.3x14x13.4 cm. ... Apart from Salluit (Sugluk) and Kuujjuaraapik, Arctic Quebec communities have had very few female sculptors. Annie Niviaxie became a popular and prolific artist in the 1970s. Her mostly small carvings of mothers and children were instantly recognizable for their stylized facial features and poses. She was also a talented sealskin wall hanging and basketry artist. This especially large work has a real sculptural presence. It ranks in importance with her Mother and Two Children (see CEAC, Sculpture/Inuit, 1971, ill. 280).--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
