Description
Repulse Bay, Four Figures, early 1970s, antler and ivory, signed in syllabics, .75 x 2.25 x 1.25 in, 2 x 6 x 3.2 cm. Provenance: private collection, Toronto. ... This is a fascinating example of Tungilik’s famous ivory “micro-miniature” works. An unusual feature of this example is that the base doubles as a storage case for the figures, in much the same way that Inuit cribbage boards had storage compartments for their pegs. It is said that at the end of his life Tungilik needed to wear two sets of eyeglasses when working on these tiny carvings. ... For an illustration of another work by Tungilik that uses its container as a base, see Swinton (1992), fig. 857. For more examples of Tungilik’s amazing micro-miniatures, see Norman Zepp, Inspiration: Four Decades of Sculpture by Canadian Inuit (Marion Scott Gallery, 1995), p. 36, and Vision and Form (Marion Scott Gallery 2003) p.45.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
