Description
Ojibwa, Spirit Buffalo, 1974, oil on canvas, signed and dated, 16 x 20 in, 40.6 x 50.8 cm, wood frame. Provenance: private collection, Ottawa. ... Born in Temagami, Chee Chee moved to Montreal in 1965 where he began to draw. He was given his first solo show in Ottawa soon after his move there in 1973. He built a successful artistic career, which sadly was cut short by his untimely death by suicide in an Ottawa jail in 1977. Chee Chee was best known for his graceful and highly linear depictions of birds and other animals on paper. This naturalistic depiction of a bison inhabited by a more stylized spirit is a quite rare example of his work on canvas.--- CATEGORIES: First Nations, Native, Indian, Northwest Coast
