Description
Baker Lake, Spiral Bound Book Containing Eleven, Drawings, ca. late 1970s, coloured crayon, coloured pencil and, graphite, signed in syllabics, each: 10 x 14 in, 25.4 x 35.6 cm. ... Mamnguqsualuk, one of the foremost artists in Baker Lake, is the daughter of Jessie Oonark (1906-1985). Like her mother, she is equally famous for her drawings and prints and her wall hangings. And probably more than any other Baker Lake artist, she has used her skills as an artist to keep the great myths and legends alive. Her achievements in this regard were celebrated in the 1986 exhibition and catalogue Keeveeok, Awake! Mamnguqsualuk and the Rebirth of Legend at Baker Lake (Ring House Gallery, Univ. of Alberta). ... This fascinating set of drawings illustrates several episodes in the great story cycle that recounts the adventures and exploits of the wandering shaman Kiviuq. Each drawing is accompanied by detailed commentary in Inuktitut by the artist (recto and verso on the first drawing, verso only on the others).--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
