Description
Baker Lake, Faces, early 1990s, black stone, signed "MIRIAM QIYUK", 6.5 x 12.75 x 5.75 in, 16.5x32.4x14.6 cm. ... This composition, with its four smiling faces, most likely represents a nuclear family, presumably Nanurluk’s own. And as with her depictions of sleeping couples (see Walker’s Nov. 2013, Lot 254, for example) the work probably has personal meaning for her. It is a far cry from some of the more somber or sober examples of multiple face imagery from the Keewatin. Many of these may carry the same meaning; perhaps Nanurluk work is a bit more overt in its message. ... For another important multiple face composition by Miriam Qiyuk, see Hessel, Arctic Spirit (Heard Museum 2006) pp. 152-53.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
