Description
possibly Baker Lake, Shaman's Hand and Face, ca. early-mid 1960s, antler, 8 x 3.5 x .5 in, 20.4 x 8.7 x 2 cm. ... One can imagine this enigmatic object being used in any number of mysterious ways, perhaps as a shaman’s wand or divining tool, or even as a back scratcher! It brings to mind The Hand, a fascinating exhibition held at the Innuit Gallery of Eskimo Art in Toronto in 1975. Interestingly, this work has a distant cousin from Qikiqtarjuaq (Broughton Island): a huge (17”) hand carved from rough weathered whale bone with a face carved in relief on its palm.--- CATEGORIES: Inuit, Eskimo
