Paulatuk/Salt Spring Island, B.C., Shaman Swimming to the Sea Goddess, 2002, mottled orange-brown and grey-green, stone, signed "ANGHIK" and dated, 10.5 x 16.25 x 7.25 in,27 x 41.3 x 18 cm. "The Inuit Shaman acted as mediator between the world of man, animals, and the spirit world. He was the keeper of Inuit stories, myths and legends…the repository of knowledge of the land and the secret worlds" (from Artist’s Statement on the artist’s website: abrahamruben.com). ... Originally from the village of Paulatuk in the Inuvialuit Region of the N.W.T., Anghik Ruben studied in Alaska and has lived in southern Canada for decades. His work has straddled the Inuit and contemporary Canadian art scenes, even though his subject matter remains resolutely northern.
