Cartier

The exclusive French jeweler and watch company Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and gained international renown in 1904 with the ‘Santos de Cartier’, a wristwatch created for the famous Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont. A further milestone in the history of modern watchmaking was the introduction of the Tank watch in 1917, which was inspired by British First World War tanks. With their Paris boutique established in the Rue de la Paix, Cartier soon opened further branches in London, New York and St. Petersburg to cater to the demand of a growing international clientele. The theme was significantly developed by Jeanne Toussaint, nicknamed ‘La Panthère’, who was the creative director of Fine Jewelry from 1933 and as a metaphor of femininity the panther remains an icon of the House of Cartier.
