Elegant Akoya pearl necklace in combination with an emblem of the Maison de Cartier that first was used in a piece of jewelry in 1917

This luxurious Akoya pearl necklace by Cartier is a masterpiece of jewelry art. The central figure of a panther in 18 karat gold, which boasts two small emeralds to the eyes and an onyx to the nose, is with no doubt a highlight of the piece. The 52 flawless Akoya pearls, which feature a delicate rosé-colored luster, are equally beautiful. The pearl clasp is fitted with a fine safety chain.

The necklace is marked with ‘Cartier’ and the fineness of ‘750’ on the underside of the paws. The underside of the panther’s tail tip bears the guarantee and the maker’s mark. The reverse of the right foreleg is numbered with ‘706904’, and the pearl clasp is marked with ‘Cartier 750’. The length of the necklace is 46 cm, and the weight is circa 46.8 grams. The condition is very good, and there are only minimal signs of wear. The necklace includes the original Cartier box and four supplementary pearls.

The exclusive French jeweler and watch company Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and gained international renown in 1904 with the ‘Santos de Cartier’, a wristwatch created for the famous Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont. A further milestone in the history of modern watchmaking was the introduction of the Tank watch in 1917, which was inspired by British First World War tanks. The theme was significantly developed by Jeanne Toussaint, nicknamed ‘La Panthère’, who was the creative director of Fine Jewelry from 1933 and as a metaphor of femininity the panther remains an icon of the House of Cartier.
