Contemporary Demonstration Model of the Action of "La Joueuse de Tympanon" Automaton by Roentgen and Kinzing
Hand-turned brass and steel mechanism with pinned arc and cam profile for the lateral and vertical movement of the musician's arm with hammer, on walnut base, height 20 ¾ in. (53 cm). A demonstration model of David Roentgen's and Peter Kinzing's celebrated "android" musician presented to the French court in 1784. The original automaton, purportedly commissioned by Queen Marie-Antoinette and bearing a striking resemblance to her, is in the collection of the Musée des Arts et Métiers, Paris. – Literature: Dr. J.J.L. Haspels (ed.), "Royal Music Machines", pp. 183–186. – A fascinating and interactive display piece suitable for a museum or exhibition of mechanical music or automata.
