Description
A Macedonian Orthodox Christian icon, created ca. 1850, depicting the Archangel Michael with many of his attributes. The angel, painted against a gold ground, carries a balance to measure human souls, an orb representing the world, a sword and armor indicating his role as a warrior and a scroll inscribed in Church Slavonic Language. The figure's features and wings are delicately modeled in the style of the followers of the Tresonce holy artist Dico Zograf (Macedonia, 1819-1873), although the particular artist is unknown. Macedonia, 19th century, polychrome on wood; unmarked. Dimensions: panel is 13-3/4" H x 9-1/4" W x 1" D; image area is 13" H x 8-1/2" W. This icon was purchased in Macedonia and exported legally; relevant documentation is available.
Condition
Very good; occasional small losses in paint; back of panel includes several small insect holes, all old.
