Marks: (lion passant), (leopard's head), (duty mark), EB, O
2-1/2 inches high x 17-1/4 inches diameter (6.4 x 43.8 cm)
98.90 troy ounces

The silver gilt footed salver with chased repoussé open-work rim with four masks of Bacchus alternating with hunting scenes, putti at play and Venus being attended by cupid, central chased floral cartouche with the Tremayne family crest inscribed HONOR ET HONESTAS to center, inscribed to verso IN GRATEFUL AND AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE, of a much regretted Friend, Francis, Lord De Dunstanbille and Basset, OB. T. 5TH FEB. 1835., raised on four scroll and dolphin-form feet.

Condition

With rubbing of gilt expected with age, with light scratches to the center of the salve indicative of use.

The impaled arms are those of John Hearle Tremayne, Esq., (born March 17 1780 - died August 27 1851) (J.P., D.L., M.P for Cornwall 1806-1826, and High Sheriff of Cornwall 1831) and his wife Caroline Matilda (youngest daughter of Sir William Lemon, 1st Baronet of Carclew). Caroline Matilda Tremayne and Lady Harriet Lemon de Dunstanville and Basset (Lord Francis Lord de Dunstanville and Basset's second wife) were sisters. So, John Hearle Tremayne, Esq. and Lord Francis Lord de Dunstanville and Basset were brothers-in-law through marriage to sisters. One of John and Caroline's sons was Arthur Tremayne, 1827-1905, who fought in the Crimean War as a Captain in the 13 Light Dragoons. He commanded "E" Troop in the Charge of the Light Brigade, when his horse was shot from under him.

The crest is: on a wreath of the colors, two arms embowed, holding between their hands a man's head proper, on the head a high-crowned hat sable. The motto: "Honor et Honestas" [Honor and Honesty]. Arms: gules three dexter arms conjoined at the shoulders and flexed in triangle or fists proper, (Tremayne); quartering argent a fess gules between three sheldrakes (shovellers) proper (Hearle); impaling argent on a chevron gules between three mullets an eagle (for Lemon).
