Dzerzhinsky, (1877-1926) who originated fromPolish noble family, was a revolutionary, a Sovietstatesman, a head of many People's Commissariats andfounder of All-Russian Extraordinary Commission(Cheka), a professional revolutionary, a brilliantorganizer and manager. He took an active part inpreparation of October Coup, and organized the RedGuards in Moscow.As a chief of Cheka he pursued thestrict policy of repression against the opponents ofBolshevik regime, initiated mass terror. He preachedand practiced that “The right of shooting is veryimportant for Cheka, even if the sword occasionallystrikes down the innocents”. It is hard to overestimatehis contribution in success of Bolsheviks who managedto stay in power from 1917 to 1991. In addition to hiswork in punitive bodies he headed the People's Commissariatof Communications and People's Commissariatof the Interior.
