Description
The AEAA is extremely proud to present this next fine piece of vintage ca. 1980-2005 Fenton Vaseline animal figurines / paperweights, from the large & diverse 30+ year collection of Mr. Loren “Butch” Morse of Yukon, Oklahoma. This fine lot represents a handsome 2001 Fenton, Topaz Opalescent & Iridized young bull elephant, with the appropriate Fenton oval mark + 0. Our gorgeous elephant is a very crisp mold, weighs 13 oz. and measures 3.5 x 3 x 2 x 3.75 inches tall. These Fenton animals are always a welcome addition to any Fenton / Vaseline collection. xxxxxxxxxxxxx.Vaseline glass animals became available from Giant glass houses such as Duncan Miller, Heisey, Hocking / Lancaster and others from the early 1920s, with one of the first being a special rocking horse blotter from Houze. Many American glass makers were involved with animal figurines in the 1930s, including Fenton which produced their #306 Sunfish as early as 1933. By the end of 1942, the War Powers scope was expanded with the drafting of the Hazardous Materials Act, which banned any and all use of rare earth and radioactive materials, reserving them specifically for the U.S. Government / Defense Department. This act obviously included Uranium Oxide, which literally exploded in luminescence under a black light. In early 1959, the act was rescinded, and Fenton became the first glass house in America to re-introduce their complete Topaz Opalescent Hobnail Vaseline Glass formula by July of that year. Lasting only until July of 1960, the topaz was abandoned until the late 1970s revival of glass animal figurines. Some of the latter 1900s Fenton animals were in reality molds from other companies. Frank M. Fenton acquired The Alley Cat, large owl, and large rabbit, all coming from the storm damaged & closed U.S. Glass Co. factory in 1962. Fenton produced a wealth of forms right up until ceasing traditional glass making at the Williamstown, W. Va. factory in July of 2011. Research consulted: Fenton Art Glass A Centennial of Glass Making 1907 to 2007, AND Fenton Burmese Glass / both by Debbie and Randy Coe; Fenton Art Glass 1907 to 1939, 2nd Ed. & Fenton Art Glass Patterns 1939 to 1980 2nd Ed., AND Fenton Art Glass Colors 1939 to 1980 / all by Margaret & Kenn Whitmyer; The Big Book of Fenton Glass 1940 to 1970 AND Fenton Glass Compendium Volumes 1 to 3 (1940 to 1970, 1970 to 1985, & 1985 - 2001), AND Fenton Glass Rarities 1940 to 1985, AND Fenton Special Orders Vol. 1 1940 to 1980 & Vol. 2 1980 to the Present / all by John Walk; Fenton Glass Made For Other Companies Vol. 1 1907 to 1980, AND Vol. 2 1970 to 2005 / both by Carrie & Gerald Domitz; Fenton Glass, The First, Second & Third 25 Years / by William Heacock James Measell and Frank Fenton; Fenton Glass The 1980s & 1990s Decades / by James Measel; Glass Animals & Figurines / by Debbie & Randy Coe; Glass Animals of the Depression Era / by Lee Garmon & Dick Spencer. xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Mr. Loren Morse was a loving family man, and also a well-known and respected member of the Vaseline Glass collecting community. His untimely passing a year ago was a blow to everyone, and we have very humbly accepted the commission to place his treasures in good homes. The Morse family gratefully appreciates your participation in this Estate sale, and wishes you all safe & prosperous Thanksgiving + Christmas seasons.
