Picasso illustrated works from Greek antiquity to the contemporary literature. The present sheet is a tribute to Picasso's lover and muse Dora Maar

In 1944, Picasso accomplished six etchings to illustrate the ‘Six Contes Fantasques’ by Maurice Toesca (1904-1998), published by Henri Flammarion in Paris and printed in 1953. Among other things, Toesca examined in his fantastic stories the relationship between art and nature, which is said to have influenced Picasso in the making of his illustrations. The present sheet with a portrait of a woman in profile illustrates the third story ‘La Naissance d’une princesse’, and depicts a portrait of Pablo Picasso’s lover Dora Maar.

The sheet is matted and mounted all round under glass in a natural wood frame. It shows some major foxing consistent with age. The frame is in very good condition. The image dimensions are 33 x 20 cm, the sheet dimensions are 33 x 24,5 cm, and the overall dimensions, including the frame, measure 47.2 x 38.5 cm.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in 1881 in the Spanish city of Málaga and first visited the Art Academy La Llotja in Barcelona and from1897 the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, which he quit without graduating. The artist spent the years around the turn of the century in Paris. He established Cubism with his French friend Georges Braque, deeply influencing later avant-garde artists. His painting ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ (1907) became a key work of modernism. Picasso has left behind an enormous body of work of about 50,000 artworks, including paintings, drawings, graphic art, sculptures and pottery. Already during Picasso’s lifetime, two museums were established in his honor: the Museo Picasso in Barcelona and the Musée Picasso in Antibes in southern France.
