Alexander Calder (1898-1976)
Alexander Calder attended the Art Students League in New York from 1923 until 1926. He began his artistic career with illustrating comic papers. During his first Parisian stay in 1926/27, where he attended drawing classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, he moved over to creating wire sculptures. He created small sculptures of wood and playful constructions of different materials. He was a strict constructivist for a period of time. Next to his ‘stables’ he created since around 1930 his first ‘mobiles’, a type of kinetic sculpture. The mobiles were moveable constructions of wire and metal pieces, which established a new genre of art and which had great influence on the arts and crafts. Works by Calder are located in numerous museums worldwide. In 1937, ‘Mercury Fountain’ was exhibited at the world fair in Paris, 1958 his ‘Spirale’ was installed at the UNESCO building in Paris. (tm)
