Raimund Girkes artistic work is characterized by the study of color in terms of its energy and material quality. After almost monochromatic white paintings, the artist used from 1977 also the colors blue, brown and black and emphasizes the contrast between light and dark. In the present lithographs from 1991, black printing ink, applied in broad brushstrokes unfolds different light-dark effects to which also the title ‘Schattenlicht” (shade light) alludes.

Raimund Girke (1930-2002)

Born in Lower Silesia the artist first studied from 1951 to 1952 at the Art School Hannover and then till 1956 at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. From 1971 to 1996 Girke was professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Based on an intensive study of the informal Girke developed a systematic method for reducing color. At the beginning of the 1960s he created almost monochrome white paintings that receive a modulating structure only by the plasticity of the color application or sublime shades of grey. It was the ambition of the artist to make color energies noticeable and give the painting despite its materiality an immaterial effect, which is evident even in his late often re-colored work. Today paintings by the artist can be found in collections of many museums. (fea)
