Red Grooms is known for his themes from American life. The depiction in this print refers to the American painter Edward Hopper. Affectionately-humorously Grooms shows the artist sitting at his easel in a landscape. Obviously is just painting his painting ‘The Lighthouse at Two Lights’. He is observed by a farmer from the area who is standing with his dog behind him. This sheet is a printers proof aside from the edition of 50 copies.


The aquatint etching in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Red Grooms ‘97’, dedicated lower left in pencil ‘For Clemens’ and titled lower center in pencil ‘”To the Lighthouse”’. The sheet is in very good condition. The image measures 38 x 37.8 cm, the sheet 55.8 x 51.2 cm.


Red Grooms (b. 1937)

Red Grooms studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Peabody College in his hometown of Nashville. In 1956 he moved to New York to study at the New School for Social Research. In 1958 his first solo exhibition in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and first happenings took place. Fascinated by three-dimensional design possibilities Grooms began to manufecture his typical sculpto-pictoramas, sculptural-pictorial works, in the course of the 1960s. In addition to painting, graphic works and sculptures in a wide variety of techniques these sculpto-pictoramas determine his work to this days. As topics serve scenes from the American urban life, to which he often reacted humorous or satirical. Today the artists, whose works can be found in numerous international museums and collections, lives and works in New York City. (fea)
