Beautiful etching by the Italian artist, showing a typical rider depiction; prints by Marino Marini fetch up to €41.000 at international auctions

Figures with horses or riders are a very popular motif of the artist, which he takes up and varies in many of his works. Also in the present etching from 1971 a horse with a rider is shown in the design vocabulary so typical of the artist. The sheet was published in an edition of 60 + XXX + 10 E.A. copies. It is accompanied by a certificate from Galerie Orangerie Reinz in Cologne.


The etching is signed lower right in pencil ‘MARINIO’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘17/60’. The sheet is hinged to a mat at spots at the reverse upper sheet edge and darkened within the mat window below the image. The condition overall is good. The frame, too, is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The plate measures 42.3 x 32.3 cm, the sheet 70 x 50 cm. The framed dimensions are 72 x 52 cm.


Marino Marini (1901-1980)

Marini studied from 1917 onwards at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1928, he travelled to Paris, where he spent consistently the following years. There, he met the artists Giorgio de Chirico, Wassily Kandinsky and Aristide Maillol. Later, he met Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the two founders of the Avant-garde. A popular topic of the Italian artist is the connection between horses and humans. Marini's most famous sculpture - "L'angelo della citta” - depicts a naked man sitting on the horse, in the patio of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. (fea)
