Very colorful and decorative portfolio by the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino; single large-format prints by the artist fetch up to €2,460 at international auction

The compositional structure of the six aquatints is largely the same. Integrated in a pattern of rectangular color areas the bust of a human figure is dominating. It looks statuary, is always depicted strictly frontal and surrounded by different characters, numbers, and symbol-like forms. The coloring of the sheets is strong and colorful. They were printed at Arte Stamperia 3 in Milan. Together with a wrapper that is printed with a text by Enzo di Martino and the imprint, they are contained in a gray cloth portfolio. This portfolio was published by Art of This Century, New York and Paris.

The six aquatints in colors are each signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘M. Paladino 2001’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘I/XXV’. Additionally the portfolio is numbered in pencil in the imprint ‘I/XXV’. The sheets are all in very good condition. The cloth portfolio is in good condition with only minor signs of wear. The plates each measure 30 x 41 cm, the sheets 57.5 x 76.2 cm. The dimensions of the portfolio are 79 x 60 cm.

Mimmo Paladino (geb. 1948)

Born in Paduli as Domenico Paladino, the artist was early introduced to painting and painting techniques. Impressed by the Biennale in Venice in 1964 Paladino decided to study painting at the Liceo Artistico in Benevento. He also experimented in non-representational work with the techniques of collage and frottage. In 1968 he completed his studies with a diploma. A graphical exploration of mythological subjects followed during which Paladino also developed his special technique of fresco-like wall painting with pastels. The first solo exhibition was shown in 1977 at the Galerie Lucio Amelio in Naples. Many more followed up to today. At the Venice Biennale in 1980 and the documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982 Paladino was represented, too. He is, together with Sandro Chia, Enzo Cucchi and Francesco Clemente one of the artists of Transavanguardia, an in individual, subjective, influenced by mythological imagery art movement which turned back to panel painting. Today Mimmo Paladino lives and works in Milan and Benevento. (fea)
