Victor Vasarely’s interest was the study of the optical possibilities offered by the graphic art. Based on different themes, ranging from stylized figurative to geometric and abstract, he created visual effects of space and energy. This collection of ten serigraphs gives a very nice impression of the motivic spectrum of the artist and the resulting different effects.

The ten serigraphs, mostly in colors, in this collection are all signed lower right, nine in pencil, one with ink. Except one all sheets are numbered differently in pencil from editions of at most 100 copies. The signature in ink is somewhat faded. The sheets are overall in good condition with occasional faint stains, minor rubbings or tiny upsettings in the edges. The frames are overall in good condition slight signs of wear. Eight of the ten sheets measure around 50 x 70 cm, wherein one is in landscape format, two sheets 66 x 60 cm. The framed dimensions are each around 72 x 52 cm, respectively 67.5 x 61.5 cm.

Victor Vasarely

Victor Vasarely was born in Pécs in Hungary in 1906. He started studying at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy in Budapest in 1927. In 1930, he moved to Paris, where he successfully worked as a graphic designer and started exploring the effect of geometric patterns on the senses. Through that interest, he created his own geometric abstractions, and noted that these patterns had kinetic effects on the viewer. With this concept, Vasarely created the basis and fundament for the origins of Op Art. Between 1955 and 1968, he regularly took part in the documenta. In 1976, he opened the Vasarely foundation in Aix-en-Provence and helped to build an institute for architecture. In the same year, the city Pécs, where he was born, honored him with the opening of a Vasarely Museum. A second museum opened in 1987 at the castle Zichy in Budapest. (fea)
