Standard: 999 Diameter: 30 mm Face value: 30 kopecks of the Government of the Merkulov brothers Mintage: 1030 Year: 2013 Obverse Fridolph K.Gek was a seafarer, whaler and explorer, born in 1836 in Finland and started to sail when he was 12. In 1863 he graduated from nautical school and got the diploma of captain. On March 26, 1868 brig Emperor Alexander II under command of Gek called Nakhodka port and landed Finnish settlers. Frodolph Gek arranged whaling in Primorye and was engaged in traffic shipping operations and fishing. Since 1893, Gek, being a public servant was a captain of the schooner Storozh (Watchman) of Ministry of StateDomains, The schooner stood guard over sea bear rookery and was entitled to perform customs survey. Gek made a survey of bays of unmapped areas of the coasts of Chukotka, Kamchatka and the Sea of Japan. Present-day generation of far eastern seamen still use the nautical charts, which marked: “By sketch survey of Skipper Gek”. His life ended in a tragedy in 1904, the skipper was buried at the Marine Cemetery of Vladivostok, and his name was given to a city street and immortalized on maps.
