Description
A fascinating and beautifully colored Wedgwood Majolica match box c.1870, provenance Kay and C.D. Gann, Atlanta Georgia. Designed as a fly, the wings and thorax forming the cover, the underside with striker, raised on spreading oval foot. A perfectly whimsical idea, the functioning fly match box also reflects the Victorians’ interest in entomology. Impressed and three letter date stamp, indistinctly marked F for 1877, 5 “l. This example is pictured in ‘Majolica Figures’ Helen Cunningham 1997 pages 44 &163. For other examples see Wedgwood Ceramics 1846-1959, a new appraisal by Maureen Batkin, p.42 and Majolica, Nicholas Dawes 1990 Page 33.
