A Large, Magnificent and Extremely Rare Raphael Bordalo Pinheiro, Caldas De Raihna Palissy Ware Wall plaque c.1880. Also see Portuguese Palissy Ware1999, Katz, Lehr Plate 126 The celebrated, Master ceramicist and cartoonist Raphael Bordalo Pinheiro, produced the finest of all of the Portuguese Palissy Ware as well monumental Italian Renaissance items. His imagination, humor, and political statements made through his majolica and Palissy Ware work established him as Portuguese hero. His character ‘Ze’ Povinho’, produced in Majolica glazes depicting a hard working, down trodden, poor peasant, struck a chord with the 19th Portuguese public and sold in thousands. Ze Povinho is still a National character.
