Description
Thangka painting with colours on fabric. Tibet, 18th – 19th cent.
In all elements, a strikingly fine and spiritual painted depiction of the popular Bodhisattva of “all-encompassing compassionâ€, shown standing large in the centre. He is eight-armed with the attributes (from upper-left) prayer chain, lotus flower, bow/arrow, water pot, wish fulfilling gesture and eight-petal chakra. The primary hands hold the cintamani-jewel. Nine of the heads are indulgent and delicately fine in the eye level section. The tenth head is very grimaced because the demons are fended off more effectively with it. The uppermost red head is that of the transcendent Buddha Amitabha, whose emanation is this boddisattva. Large double-nimbus. Left above is the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, to the right the future Buddha Maitreya with lotus flowers (with wheel and pot inside), gesturing the “turning of the wheel of dharmaâ€. Below are two grimaced Krodha-deities; on the left, the red Hayagriva with several arms, horse-heads in his flaming hair, as well as tiger-fur, skull chains and many attributes. On the right in blue colour, the rain-god Vajrapani with a snake in his flaming hair, tiger-fur apron and holding up a vajra, in the other hand a catching loop. Furthermore, depicted below is a lotus pond, flaming ratna and peaches of longevity. Very good quality painting, good condition, conceived on black fabric and with partially gilded frame.
PAINTING 72,3 x 57 CM, FRAME 85,4 x 69,7 CM
