Gray slate. India, Gandhara, former West-India, 3rd to 4th cent.
Interesting early and very rare depiction of a standing Bodhisattva from the Gandhara culture, possibly an early form of a padmapani (literally “Lotus-carrierâ€), as there may have once been a lotus flower in one hand. The other hand is held-up in the abhayamudra, the gesture according divine protection. The Bodhisattva wears jewelry and a moustache, the right half of the body is unclothed until below the navel. The facial features are eloquent and lively. On the head is a turban with a frontal emblem. The wall figure is flat on the backside and mounted on a black metal socket. Signs of age, authentic condition.
